Plekhanov Russian University of Economics was founded in 1907. For more than 100 years, the university has always been closely connected with the national economy: the commerce and food production technology development at the beginning of the 20th century, the commodity science formation, the cooperative movement growth, the state economic statistics and planning systems creation, economic reforms of 1965-1970, macroeconomic and sectoral research in the 1980s, promoting the market structures formation in the 1990s. The Scientific school of the University (academicians L. Abalkin, A. Aganbegyan, V. Mayevsky, L. Grinberg, V. Makarov, P. Bunich, V. Ivanter, V. Kuleshov, corresponding member R. Grinberg) has long been the core of the academic economic community of Russia. The high practical orientation of education and its connection with the economic situation realities in the country have been a unique characteristic of the university for many years. In 2012-2015, Plekhanov Russian University of Economics was enlarged by joining the Saratov State University of Socio-Economics, the Russian State University of Commerce and Economics and the Moscow State University of Economics, Statistics and Informatics.
Currently, at Plekhanov Russian University of Economics, education is carried out across the entire range of educational programs: from secondary general education to postgraduate and doctoral studies.
Education at PRUE is organized in Moscow. There are also 15 branches located in cities of the Russian Federation and abroad. Over 50,000 students and 780 postgraduates study at PRUE under higher education programs, 2,500 teachers work. There are more than 20,000 students, 580 graduate students and 1,200 teachers at the main university. Plekhanov Russian University of Economics has 8,400 students enrolled in secondary vocational education programs and employs over 400 teachers, including 3,500 students and 150 teachers at the main university.

The advantage of the current educational model of PRUE is a combination of economic and managerial education focused on practice, strong mathematical (statistical) and legal training, the use of information technology. The focus on practice is also ensured by the presence of natural science departments and expertise in the field of trade, commodity science, economics and enterprise management, as well as related specialties. Advanced mathematical training is provided due to a high proportion of disciplines that actively use the economic and statistical apparatus, information technology.
Since 2012, PRUE has been included in the QS World University Rankings. Over the past two years, PRUE has been improving its position in regional rankings (QS University Rankings: BRICS, QS University Rankings: Emerging Europe & Central Asia), in international Internet rankings Webometrics, Alexa, 4ICU. Since 2015, PRUE has been providing information for participation in THE WUR rating.

It includes ensuring a proactive assessment of achieving the target parameters of the strategic development of the Russian Federation subjects, creating an operational database of the Russian Federation subject electronic passport, typologizing regions and justifying the allocation of advanced development zones, improving the territorial planning system and a number of other tasks.
